Solution overview
As high-speed internet has spread, internet television (IPTV) has been rolled out with many advantages.
- Watch cable television and browse the internet over the same link
- Always available: no busy signal, no waiting and very stable
- It comfortably serves applications that demand high-speed internet access and interactive data services: distance education and training, video on demand, internet telephony, music streaming, video conferencing and more.
Wicell is the pioneering — and only — Wi-Fi manufacturer to carry IPTV over Wi-Fi at point-to-point distances up to 20 km and point-to-multipoint coverage up to 5 km. Wicell applies TDMA technology and the 802.11ac/n Wi-Fi standard at up to 1300 Mbps, creating very large, stable bandwidth for smooth HD film channels. Wicell also supports multicast, the primary protocol for IPTV delivery, and provides proxy server capability on the controller itself, caching IPTV channels in very large memory to serve areas with many users.
Wicell's IPTV transport technology allows deployment at locations where cable cannot reach each IPTV set-top box — fish rafts, shrimp ponds, farms and plantations — and can even serve mobile locations such as tourist boats offering overnight stays in Ha Long Bay, or trains.
Solution highlights
Strong interference rejection and very high bandwidth
Wicell uses the newest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac/n, with a peak rate of 1300 Mbps (a real-world 800 Mbps over UDP), enough to carry 100 standard television channels, 61 SD channels or 50 HD channels. Combining several Wicell transceivers on a single antenna mast increases capacity exponentially. Working at 4.9 – 5.8 GHz gives it excellent interference rejection on the transport link.
Dynamic Bridging Mesh protocol
Wireless IPTV delivery to mobile locations is where Wicell technology really stands apart. With the Dynamic Bridging Mesh protocol, the receiving point automatically selects the best link — the highest bandwidth from the nearest Wi-Fi access point with the strongest signal.
The widest possible coverage
With the very high 900 mW to 1300 mW output of the receiving stations, point-to-multipoint coverage can reach a 5 km radius when paired with high-gain, wide-beam antennas such as sector, panel or horn types.
Multicast protocol support for IPTV transport
Very few Wi-Fi devices today support the multicast protocol. Wicell is a leading technology that does, coupled with intelligent routing purpose-built for carrying video and audio. The Wicell controller also acts as a proxy server, on extremely powerful hardware of up to 72 cores at 1 GHz with 16 GB of RAM.
The longest point-to-point IPTV transmission range
Wicell devices offer very high output, from 1000 mW to 2000 mW. This is among the highest in the world, allowing links of up to 20 km when paired with high-gain antennas such as grid or dish antennas.
Stable transmission speeds
Unlike ordinary Wi-Fi technologies, Wicell uses TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) to carry IPTV, so the system is very stable and its bandwidth is not encroached on by other traffic such as internet and data sharing the same link.
